Innovation is the name of the game: a straw-fired power station and a commercial wave energy device, LIMPET (Land-Installed Marine-Powered Energy Transformer) are a few of the innovative projects by which the UK is rapidly building up a reputation as a global leader in environmental issues.

Sustainable development is high up on the UK’s list of environmental priorities, with some clear-cut goals including reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and maintenance of reliable energy supplies. The UK government’s latest strategy for sustainable development, ‘Securing The Future’, was launched on 7 March 2005. The new strategy takes into account environmental developments that have occurred, both within the country and globally, since the 1999 strategy and administrative changes occasioned by modifications in the government structure. Details of the UK’s 2005 sustainable development strategy are available at http://www.sustainable-development.gov.uk/publications/uk-strategy/index.htm

All of the UK government’s Departments are responsible for the success of the strategy, with Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) in overall charge. To find out more about the UK government’s environmental wing visit http://www.defra.gov.uk/

The British Council’s online environment resource, Environment UK, provides a host of information on government departments and charities involved in environmental matters, environmental agencies and bodies, both national and international, and institutions engaged in environmental research.
