Educational and research
ties between the UK and India have always
been strong. A pointer is the number
of students who make their way to the
UK for their studies every year; the
figure was as high as 17,000 in 2005.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s
visit to India in September 2005 gave
a further fillip to the UK-India educational
bond with his announcement of a fresh
initiative to bolster the knowledge
and education partnership between the
two countries and dedication of a substantial
fund for the purpose. This is expected
to step up collaboration at all levels
of education, to increase mutually beneficial
activities and to meet better the growing
demands of young people and of academia
in both the countries.
New and innovative ways are now being
devised to attract Indian students to
the UK to avail of ‘edUKation’.
These include UK
Roadshows. Held at venues all over
the country from September–December
last year to apprise students, teachers
and academics of the numerous educational
opportunities in the UK, the concept
proved to be a big success.
